A mature age-recruit heading into season six, Jas Ferguson’s strong bank of experience playing VFLW football saw her make a smooth transition to the top level of the game.
Her qualities were on show for all to see prior to being drafted, with a place in the 2021 VFLW Team of the Year strengthening her claim to being one of the top players in the nation at reserve level. A strong marking, competitive defender, Ferguson is most at home playing at centre half-back to not only help negate her direct opponent, but to use her quality kicking to help set the team up - however she’s a strong influence anywhere in the backline. Alternating between centre half-back and full-back over the 2022 season, Ferguson’s ability to perform in the deepest defender role in the absence of Dani Hardiman made fans question how she slipped to pick No.51 in the 2021 NAB AFLW Draft. Bona fide key defenders can be hard to come by at the top level, and if her season six is anything to go by, North Melbourne has certainly found one in Ferguson.
