'I wanted to be a farmer': 10 questions with Rachelle Martin

Who is your all-time favourite footballer or athlete?

Steph Curry in the NBA, how he represents himself, as well as the crazy shots and three-pointers. He's always entertaining, so I love watching him.

Who is the worst teammate on social media?

There's so many. I guess Hannah Munyard and Maddy Newman, they love TikTok and when the cameras are out at training, they love making sure they're tanned, their hair is done and they all look good.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be a farmer, and my dad wanted me to be a weather girl so I could tell him the weather around harvest time. Our family farm is on the Yorke Peninsula, between Minlaton and Stansbury. We grew up with sheep, cattle, even emus, but we do cropping now, so wheat, barley, canola. Me and my sister (teammate Hannah Button) and my older brother [and parents], and we ran it together as a family with my grandpa, when he was still with us.

Who is your toughest opponent?

Probably Tyla Hanks. She's very silky, and the way she plays (is difficult to combat). She's the same height as me, and I'm not used to that (Martin is 153cm), so she's difficult to tackle as well.

Which Olympic sport would you love to compete in?

I think I'd like to do gymnastics. I used to do calisthenics when I was younger, so being able to do the tricks would be fun. I like the floor routines, I think I'd be built OK for gymnastics, too.

Which teammate is most likely to go on and coach?

Chelsea Randall, Anne Hatchard or Sarah Allan. Those girls do a lot for the community, helping out at the club, so I can see them doing coaching in the future. They share a lot of wisdom with us at training as well, so can definitely see them being coaches.

Do you have any pre-game rituals or superstitions?

Not really, I like to keep it simple so I don't stress out in case I miss something. I usually just like to have a kick with my sister beforehand.

What was the first concert you attended?

First concert was with my family, we went and saw Adam Harvey and Beccy Cole, country singers, because my dad loves country. I grew up listening to country music, that was my very first concert and I haven't really been to One Direction or anything like that.

What is the non-football accomplishment of which you're most proud?

I graduated uni in 2019 and I was fortunate enough to get a job with a big four accounting firm. Coming from the country, I never thought I would go corporate and have a job in the city. I had a bit of banter with my maths teacher – who also taught my dad – and he called me the runt of the litter, so I wouldn’t mind seeing how he’s doing nowadays.

Would you prefer to take Mark or Goal of the Year?

Both would be nice. Maybe goal … actually, I'll go mark, because it'd be nice to have a change from 'DP' (Danielle Ponter) 'speccying' me at training, I'd like to do it to someone else for a change.
