    Record-breaking Lions hammer hapless Eagles

BRISBANE has set a record for the biggest AFLW score but fell agonisingly short of posting three figures in a 74-point pummelling of West Coast.

The defending champions led 46-0 at half-time before cruising to the 15.8 (98) to 4.0 (24) victory at Mineral Resources Park on Sunday.

Brisbane's total eclipsed the previous record score of 13.9 (87) set by Carlton against Gold Coast in round eight last year.

The Lions had the chance to become the first team to reach triple figures, but Greta Bodey's 38m set shot with less than three minutes remaining drifted just wide.

The result improved Brisbane's record to 6-2, lifting them to fourth spot and moving them to within a win of second-placed Melbourne.

AFLW Match Highlights: West Coast v Brisbane

The Eagles and Lions clash in round eight of the NAB AFL Women's Competition

The 30 percentage points they gained could prove crucial in the race for top-two and top-four berths.

West Coast (1-7) are now last on the ladder following St Kilda's shock three-point win over Gold Coast earlier in the day.

Star Lions midfielder Emma Bates finished with 31 disposals and seven clearances in a best afield display, while forward Jesse Wardlaw and Sophie Conway booted three goals apiece.

Sophie Conway and Isabel Dawes extended their side's lead with this pair of ripping goals

West Coast skipper Emma Swanson fought hard for 22 disposals and six clearances, but the midfield were outgunned by Brisbane's star-studded on-ball brigade.

Brisbane set the tone of the match in a brutal first quarter in which they amassed 15 inside 50s to 0 and piled on four unanswered goals.

The pain continued in the second quarter as Wardlaw booted her second and third goals.

Bodey snaps through Lions' instant reply

    00:52 Feb 27. 2022. 6:26 PM

Greta Bodey was quick to reply after West Coast got on the board for the first time, nailing this brilliant running snap goal

There were a number of records set in the half-time stats.

The 46-point margin was the biggest-ever half-time lead, West Coast's two inside 50s was the lowest-ever in a first half, and Bates' 22 disposals was the highest first-half tally.

West Coast's first inside 50m entry didn't come until midway through the second quarter, and their first score didn't come until Dana Hooker kicked a goal early in the third quarter.

By then the game was already over.

Hooker gives Eagles ideal start to second half

Dana Hooker nailed her shot after receiving a 50m penalty which was her side's first for the afternoon

Brisbane suffered a heartbreaking three-point loss to Melbourne on Monday when Bodey's set shot after the final siren fell just short.

They used the pain of that defeat to put West Coast to the sword in 32-degree heat in Perth.

The only downer to come out for the match for Brisbane was Orla O'Dwyer's right shoulder injury.

O'Dwyer, who already had her shoulder strapped, suffered the injury while attempting a tackle and immediately left the field cradling her right arm.

Hooker went off late for West Coast with a leg injury.

    Did you see that?
Dakota Davidson marked her return to AFLW action after recovering from concussion with a clever goal in the first quarter. Having just missed a similar snap a few minutes earlier, the powerful forward was cast in the unfamiliar role of goalsneak when she roved a pack and split the middle as the Lions' early onslaught shut down the Eagles.

    The hero
Brisbane's Emily Bates set an AFLW record by racking up 22 disposals in the first half as the Lions made it a procession in the opening two quarters. There was plenty of footy to be shared around as the visitors held the Eagles scoreless in the first half and Bates made the most of it. Her pace slowed in the second half but the damage had been done.

    The ladder now
Brisbane has dislodged North Melbourne from the top four and trails Fremantle in third place by percentage only. The Lions, however, are a win behind front-runners Adelaide and Melbourne with two rounds remaining. Meanwhile, West Coast is staring at the wooden spoon after taking a huge percentage hit, and now sits bottom after St Kilda's drought-breaking win against Gold Coast on Sunday.

    What's next?
The Lions will host fellow top-four contender North Melbourne in a finals-shaping clash on Sunday at Maroochydore, while the Eagles will look to bounce back against the Western Bulldogs at Optus Stadium on Saturday night.
