Blues down Giants to go back-to-back, Darcy makes history

CARLTON star Darcy Vescio has made AFLW history, becoming the competition's first player to kick 50 career goals.

Vescio reached the milestone in the Blues' 18-point win against Greater Western Sydney at Manuka Oval on Sunday, as the visitors led from start to finish.

A pair of third-quarter goals from Vescio helped the Carlton take control of the contest, twice marking and goaling in a five-minute span to provide an advantage the Blues would never surrender as they ran out 7.9 (51) to 5.3 (33) winners.

Georgia Gee had kicked the game's opener, able to run into an open goal and capitalise on strong defensive pressure from Maddy Prespakis.

The Giants and Blues clash in round eight of the NAB AFL Women's Competition

Carlton controlled the majority of the play and won the ball at ground level, but imprecision by foot cost them and the Giants struck either side of quarter-time through Tait Mackrill and Cora Staunton.

The topsy-turvy encounter continued as Courtney Jones danced around an opponent and put Abbie McKay through for a Carlton goal before Prespakis showed class, drilling a set shot from 35m.

Giant Katie Loynes was next to hit the scoreboard, snapping truly against her old side, to leave GWS two points behind at the main break.

Carlton began the second half firing and kicked clear through Vescio, but an impressive running goal from Nicola Barr kept the Giants within reach, down 13 points at the final break.

But McKay kicked her second to put them 19 points clear to start the last and the Blues dug in to claim the 18-point win.

Gab Pound impressed for the Blues with 21 disposals while Prespakis was at her busy best with 20.

Carlton had 70 more disposals than the Giants, controlling much of the game with uncontested possession.

GWS struggled to get their game going, perhaps showing signs of fatigue after also having played three games in eight days.

Nicola Barr (17 disposals) and Alicia Eva (17 disposals, six clearances) were among the Giants' best, and Cora Staunton kicked two goals from limited opportunities.

Both teams are now 3-5 for the season and remain slim chances of making finals.

    The moment
Champion Blue Darcy Vescio became the first AFLW player to kick 50 career goals with their second major of the night. Georgia Gee found the star forward with a sharp pass, before Pepa Randall's late tackle cost the Giants a 50m penalty. Vescio strolled in from point-blank range to boot their 50th major, beating fellow guns Erin Phillips (46 goals) and Tayla Harris (44) to the milestone.

Darcy Vescio becomes the first AFLW player to kick 50 goals across their career

    Did you see that?
Former Carlton veteran Katie Loynes marked her first outing against her old side with a second-quarter goal that lifted the Giants' collective spirits. Loynes, 35, perfectly roved a stoppage at the top of the GWS attacking 50, threw the ball on the boot and watched it sail through the big sticks. The moment wasn't lost on her teammates, who swamped her in celebration.
